How to add a trending graph to a PanelView 1000 HMI using RSLogix 500 and Factory Talk View as the software

To add a trending graph to a PanelView 1000 (using FactoryTalk View Studio ME) driven by an SLC 500 controller (programmed via RSLogix 500), you must first configure a data log in the HMI software, tie it to your PLC tags, and then place a Trend object onto your HMI screen.

Here is the step-by-step process:

Step 1: Configure the Data Log in FactoryTalk View Studio

The Trend object reads data from a storage buffer, so you must first tell the HMI which PLC tags to record.

  1. In the FactoryTalk View Studio Explorer tree, expand the Data Logging folder.

  2. Double-click Data Log Models and create a new model (e.g., name it MyPLC_Data).

  3. In the Setup tab, configure the storage method (e.g., memory or file storage) and set the Log rate (how often it records the tags).

  4. Go to the Tags in Model tab.

  5. Browse your RSLinx shortcut to find your RSLogix 500 controller tags (e.g., an integer N7:0 or floating-point F8:0).

  6. Select the tags you want to graph, click Add, and click OK to save the model.

Step 2: Create a Startup Macro to Start Logging

The HMI needs an instruction to begin logging data automatically when it boots up.

  1. In the Explorer tree, double-click Startup.

  2. Check the box for Data Logging.

  3. Select the Data Log Model you created in Step 1 from the dropdown menu.

  4. Click OK to save.

Step 3: Add the Trend Object to Your HMI Screen

  1. Open the HMI screen where you want the graph to appear.

  2. From the top menu, select Objects > Trend > Trend.

  3. Click and drag on your screen layout to draw the boundaries of the graph. Because this PanelView 1000 has a fixed 640 x 480 VGA display, make sure to size it clearly so it is legible on a 10.4-inch screen.

  4. Right-click the newly drawn graph and select Properties.

Step 4: Configure the Trend Properties

  1. Display Tab: Customize your visual preferences, such as the background color, grid lines, and time-span intervals for the X-axis.

  2. Pens Tab: Click Add Pen to link your tags. Choose Data Log as the source, pick the model you created in Step 1, and add the tags. Customize the color and thickness for each pen line.

  3. Connections Tab: Ensure the Trend object points correctly to your active Data Log model. Click Apply and OK.

Step 5: Verify the Communication Shortcut

Because RSLogix 500 communicates over protocols like DF1, DH485, or Ethernet/IP, ensure your HMI project's RSLinx Enterprise / FactoryTalk Linx runtime path perfectly matches the local design path pointing to your SLC 500 processor. If the runtime path is missing, the trend lines will remain blank on the physical PanelView terminal.

Are you connecting this HMI to the SLC 500 processor over DH-485, RS-232 (DF1), or Ethernet? Knowing this will let me help you configure the exact communications path if your tags aren't updating.
